ChatGPT now creates animated GIFs using the new Images 2.6 model
OpenAI has updated ChatGPT with the Images 2.6 model, allowing users to generate animated GIFs from text and photos while speeding up creation.

ChatGPT has gained a brand-new capability: the creation of animated GIF files. Powered by OpenAI's new image model, Images 2.6, users can now generate GIF animations directly from text prompts or uploaded photographs, edit individual frames, and adjust playback speed seamlessly.
- ChatGPT can now generate animated GIFs in a single step from text and photos
- Integrated Images 2.6 model supports individual frame editing and speed control
- User activity has surged to over 4 billion images created per week
- Developers receive two new APIs: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst
Features of the Images 2.6 model
Prior to this update, ChatGPT was unable to create GIF files in a single step. The new Images 2.6 model also accelerates the overall image generation process within ChatGPT. This feature rollout comes after OpenAI paused work on Sora, its video-creation application, back in March.
The update is rolling out and is now available to all ChatGPT and Codex users across web platforms, desktop applications, and mobile devices, ensuring widespread access to these enhanced generative capabilities.

Developers have also been provided with two new API models: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare, which is optimized for speed, and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst, designed to deliver high-quality outputs. These models continue the reform initiated by OpenAI with Images 2.5 in September, when Adobe integrated one of its models into Firefly.
User activity is experiencing strong growth, with OpenAI reporting that more than 4 billion images are currently being created every week, including GIFs, up from 3 billion in September. These figures reflect the broader usage of OpenAI's suite of tools.
What this means for users and businesses
The addition of native GIF generation makes ChatGPT an even more versatile asset for creators, marketers, and everyday users who no longer need third-party tools for basic animation. For developers, the new APIs unlock powerful integration options to build advanced visual features into external applications.
