Dropbox acquires Tigris Data for $350M to boost AI infrastructure

Dropbox has announced plans to acquire cloud storage startup Tigris Data for 350 million dollars to strengthen its artificial intelligence infrastructure. In addition, the acquisition will support the development of DBX Agent Cloud, a new storage platform tailored for businesses and developers creating AI models and agents, making it the largest deal for Dropbox to date.

  • The acquisition is valued at 350 million dollars.
  • The deal supports the development of the new DBX Agent Cloud platform.
  • Both parties plan to close the transaction in the fourth quarter of 2026.
  • Tigris Data was founded by former Uber infrastructure engineers.

Transaction details and closing timeline

The companies plan to close the transaction in the fourth quarter of 2026. Dropbox stated that it currently has no plans to cut staff as part of the acquisition. Earlier this spring, longtime CEO Drew Houston stepped down after 19 years of leadership, and in the fall, the company laid off 9 percent of its workforce globally.

Initially, DBX Agent Cloud will offer object storage as a standalone product. This will allow businesses to purchase storage space and use the platform alongside existing tools and applications compatible with Amazon S3. Dropbox also plans to expand DBX Agent Cloud with new tools to help AI systems work seamlessly with documents, images, audio, and video content.

AI integration across main products

Dropbox is also expanding AI capabilities within its core product suite. Users will be able to prompt AI to perform supported tasks using their files, choose between different language models, and connect Dropbox content to external tools including ChatGPT, Claude, and Muse. The updated interface is already available to more than 70,000 teams in the US, UK, and Australia.

Background and strategic context

Tigris Data was founded by former Uber engineers who worked on the ride-hailing company's data storage infrastructure. The startup offers cloud storage technologies that help businesses access data across multiple regions by automatically placing information closer to users and computing resources. Previously, Dropbox acquired several AI-focused companies, including Reclaim.ai, Promoted.ai, and Mobius Labs.
