Hackers breach popular AI coding tool OpenCode, running up user charges
Open-source AI coding agent OpenCode suffered a security breach where hackers stole API keys and accumulated unauthorized charges on users' accounts.

OpenCode, a popular open-source AI coding agent that has gained traction as an alternative to Claude Code and Cursor, has been targeted by hackers. Attackers managed to compromise a part of its online platform and steal API keys belonging to several users.
As a result of the breach, unauthorized activity led to unexpected charges accumulating on victims' AI accounts. This security failure highlights the growing risks associated with managing cloud-connected development tools and third-party integrations.
Interestingly, the AI tools that the hackers turned to for assistance repeatedly refused to process or examine the malicious code. The built-in safety guardrails of the AI models successfully prevented them from cooperating with the attackers' instructions.
For the broader tech ecosystem, this incident serves as a critical warning about the importance of safeguarding API keys and managing credentials securely when adopting new open-source developer tools. Security best practices are more essential than ever as AI coding assistants become mainstream.
Developers and platforms alike must remain vigilant as automated tools become prime targets for malicious actors. The ongoing investigation aims to secure the affected infrastructure and prevent similar incidents from disrupting the community.
