High gas prices are pumping up used EV sales: these are flying off the lot

A new car affordability crisis and high gas prices are driving an unprecedented number of used car buyers to consider electric vehicles. Increased demand without a matching supply means these used EVs are flying off dealer lots.

  • Average days on the lot for popular used EV models dropped to between 29 and 35 days.
  • iSeeCars reported that average transaction prices for EVs rose 9.8% last month, compared to just 0.3% for ICE vehicles.
  • Models like the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron, Toyota bZ4X, and Polestar 2 are turning in an average of 35 days or less.
  • Used electric vehicles averaged a price of $32,533 in September 2026, up from $29,637 a year earlier.

Days on the lot and dealer inventory dynamics

Days on the lot is a critical metric for dealers because vehicles are commonly financed through floorplan credit, and every extra day means more interest payments. In October, the average new car spent 82 days on the lot. By contrast, the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron Quattro with a 258-mile range is turning in just 29.8 days, highlighting rapid inventory turnover.

According to a pricing study by iSeeCars, the Toyota bZ4X, Lexus RZ300e, Honda Prologue, and Polestar 2 are all turning in an average of 35 days or less. The BMW i4, iX, Kia EV6, and Chevrolet Equinox EV are just a day or two behind. Analysts note that EV asking prices are appreciating much faster than other vehicle types.

Market shifts and consumer preferences

The rapid turnover of used EVs highlights a structural shift driven by fuel costs. While hybrid vehicles show moderate improvements in pricing and sales speed, gasoline-powered vehicles have seen their selling times increase. This trend points to a robust and rapidly growing secondary market for electric transportation.
