iOS 27.3 Beta Brings Apple Intelligence to China

Apple has started rolling out select Apple Intelligence features to users in China through the iOS 27.3 beta update. Developers in the region can now enable the AI capabilities after updating their devices to the new software. While Apple Intelligence originally launched in the United States alongside iOS 18.1, bringing the technology to China required a strategic partnership with Alibaba and formal approval from Chinese regulatory authorities.

  • Apple Intelligence features are now available to developers in China in the iOS 27.3 beta.
  • Alibaba's Qwen language model is integrated to power core AI tools and Siri requests.
  • Live Translation, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, and Photos Clean Up are included.
  • Public beta release is expected soon, with the final iOS 27.3 launch slated for December.

Partnership with Alibaba and Qwen Integration

Strict regulatory frameworks governing artificial intelligence in China meant that Apple had to navigate local compliance before launching its AI suite. By partnering with tech giant Alibaba and securing the necessary regulatory clearance, Apple was able to bypass regional hurdles. Core features such as Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence now seamlessly integrate Alibaba's advanced Qwen model.

The integration of the Qwen model significantly enhances user capabilities. For instance, Siri can now relay complex user requests to Qwen in order to provide much more in-depth and contextual answers. Additionally, Writing Tools not only allow users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text, but also generate fresh content directly through Qwen integration.

Features Available in the China Beta

The initial rollout in the iOS 27.3 beta encompasses a robust set of everyday features. Live Translation is now supported across Messages, FaceTime, and the Phone app, and it also functions natively with AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 2, and later headphone models. The Photos app gains the Clean Up tool for removing distracting objects from images, alongside natural language search and memory movie generation.

Mail app users will benefit from email summaries, smart reply suggestions, and priority email sorting. Notifications also receive automated summaries and a dedicated focus mode, while audio recordings in the Notes app can now be summarized automatically. However, this specific regional build does not include advanced Siri AI features, the standalone Siri app, or the newest capabilities introduced broadly in iOS 27.

Public Beta and Release Outlook

At present, the features are restricted to developers testing the iOS 27.3 beta software, but Apple is expected to launch a public beta program shortly. This will allow eligible device owners in China to experience the new AI integrations firsthand. Apple anticipates an official public release of iOS 27.3 in December, marking a major expansion milestone for the Apple Intelligence ecosystem.
