Nvidia may guarantee debts for Anthropic data center builder
Nvidia is discussing multi-billion dollar guarantees for Nscale, which is building a data center campus for Anthropic in West Virginia.

Nvidia is currently in talks to provide financial guarantees for the multi-billion dollar debt financing of British cloud provider Nscale. The company is constructing a massive data center campus in West Virginia specifically to support Anthropic's growing needs. This potential backing from the AI accelerator giant aims to help secure necessary capital for construction and reliable power supplies for the high-tech facilities.
- Nvidia is discussing a residual value guarantee mechanism for Nscale's construction loans.
- Anthropic's contract for the first campus phase is valued at $44.6 billion using Vera Rubin chips.
- Nvidia's overall investment and credit support for cloud providers has reached $170 billion.
The Residual Value Guarantee Mechanism
The discussion centers around a residual value guarantee mechanism designed to mitigate financial risks. Should Nscale fail to meet its debt obligations regarding construction payments, Nvidia would temporarily take control of the facility. Following this, the hardware giant would assist in finding a new buyer and tenant for the infrastructure. Consequently, the AI chip manufacturer is essentially prepared to act as a guarantor for loans tied to one of its biggest customers.
The contract between Anthropic and Nscale for the initial phase of the campus is estimated at $44.6 billion with a targeted capacity of 460 megawatts. The computational backbone for this massive installation is slated to be Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin accelerators. Additionally, both companies are already discussing a potential second phase valued at approximately $45 billion, highlighting the extreme scale of their long-term infrastructure ambitions.

Despite these grand projections, Nscale remains far from its stated operational targets. As of August, the company operated around 25,000 modern AI accelerators while nursing plans to deploy nearly 500,000 units. Furthermore, the West Virginia project has encountered regulatory delays and environmental hurdles, including construction runoff repeatedly flooding neighboring homes. The site successfully secured state certification only in September.
This level of corporate backing becomes increasingly critical amid rising investor skepticism regarding specialized cloud providers, often called neoclouds, and their ability to recoup massive AI infrastructure investments. In October alone, shares of major market players like CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN dropped by over 30 percent. Meanwhile, Nscale is preparing for an initial public offering valuing the firm up to $35 billion despite these operational bottlenecks.
Strategic Implications for Nvidia
For Nvidia, this move represents a deeper evolution into directly financing customer infrastructure expansion. Historically, the company's support for cloud providers primarily revolved around capacity leasing and direct chip purchases rather than covering heavy construction costs. According to reports from The Information, Nvidia's total investment and credit commitments to specialized cloud providers and key clients have reached approximately $170 billion.
Back in September, Nvidia also committed to providing Nscale with $1 billion in convertible financing. While the debt guarantee remains under active negotiation, finalizing it would strengthen financial ties and safeguard crucial orders for Nvidia hardware. For Nscale, it serves as a vital pathway to secure funding, while for Nvidia, it minimizes the risk of an infrastructure project tied to its chips failing to materialize.
