WhatsApp is bringing iOS-style chat previews to Android
WhatsApp is testing iOS-style chat previews on Android. Users will be able to peek at messages without triggering read receipts.

WhatsApp has long allowed users to completely turn off read receipts, but keeping them enabled meant Android users lacked an easy way to check incoming messages without blue ticks appearing. Notifications help unless dismissed or buried under a pile of other chats. iPhone users have enjoyed this workaround for a while, and now Android users are finally set to get it too.
- WhatsApp for Android is developing a chat preview feature similar to iOS
- Long-pressing a chat brings up a floating card with recent messages without sending read receipts
- Unlike iOS, the Android preview window allows scrolling to check older messages within the thread
- The feature was spotted in beta version 2.26.44.12 and is not yet available to public beta testers
How chat previews work On iOS, users can long-press a conversation in the chat list to trigger a pop-up window displaying the most recent messages without activating blue ticks. However, that window does not scroll, limiting the preview for longer threads. On Android, long-pressing a chat currently only selects it and reveals the top bar containing pin, archive, mute, and delete options. Nevertheless, a code teardown of WhatsApp for Android beta 2.26.44.12 has revealed that identical chat preview mechanics are in the works. Long-pressing a conversation will invoke a floating card containing the newest messages in the thread, accompanied by a refreshed context menu positioned underneath.
Android advantages and current development status Peeking at conversations this way will not transmit read receipts to the sender. Interestingly, unlike the iOS implementation, the Android version will allow users to scroll up inside the preview window to check older messages without triggering read receipts for any of them either. The feature remains under active development and has not rolled out even to public beta testers yet. As is often the case with code teardowns, there is no official release date for the stable channel, and features found early do not always make the final cut to production.
What this means for users If released, this feature will bring much-needed parity between the Android and iOS versions of WhatsApp, enhancing day-to-day usability for millions of mobile users. It eliminates the need to disable read receipts entirely just to maintain privacy when glancing at important messages quickly.
