Windows 11 gains ability to reinstall without USB flash drive
The new Cloud Rebuild feature in update KB5127936 lets users reinstall Windows 11 via the cloud even on unbootable PCs without USB drives.

Microsoft has introduced a new Cloud Rebuild feature for Windows 11, fundamentally changing how users can recover their operating system. Available as part of the latest optional update KB5127936, the feature allows reinstalling the OS without relying on USB flash drives or custom installation images.
- The Cloud Rebuild feature downloads the OS and necessary device drivers directly via Windows Update.
- The tool functions even when the existing operating system is corrupted and the PC fails to boot.
- The update includes disk cleaning options and remote management capabilities for IT administrators.
How Cloud Rebuild Works Unlike the previously existing Cloud Download option, Cloud Rebuild goes a step further by downloading not just Windows itself, but all required hardware drivers straight from Microsoft servers. This works independently of whether the currently installed operating system is functional, allowing recovery on devices that refuse to boot altogether.
To use the feature on a working system, navigate to Settings, System, Recovery, and select the PC reset option. If Windows fails to start, the device will automatically enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) after several failed boot attempts, where users can select Cloud Rebuild from the troubleshooting menu.
Additional Features and Security Before initiating Cloud Rebuild, users are strongly advised to back up important files as the recovery process involves data modification. The tool offers options to either simply remove personal files or securely erase data using storage hardware features before the fresh Windows installation begins. The PC must remain connected to the internet and power during the entire process.

Significance for Users The introduction of Cloud Rebuild eliminates the need to prepare bootable USB recovery drives in advance. In the event of a severe system crash, Windows can independently fetch the operating system and required drivers straight from Microsoft servers, streamlining maintenance for individual users and enterprise IT staff alike.
