Xiaomi Smart Lock 5: Features, Battery Life, and Specs of New Smart Lock

Xiaomi has expanded its smart home lineup in China with the official release of the new Xiaomi Smart Lock 5 door lock. The device combines a sleek modern design, an upgraded fully automatic locking mechanism, and advanced security capabilities.

  • Features a push-pull mechanism that automatically locks the door once closed.
  • Powered by 8 AA batteries offering up to 12 months of standard battery life.
  • The fingerprint scanner unlocks the door in 0.7 seconds or less.
  • Equipped with a USB-C emergency port, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.

Design and Build Quality

The lock is finished in a sleek black color with wear-resistant panels designed to withstand everyday wear and tear. The front panel measures 400 × 76 × 21 mm, while the rear panel measures 400 × 76 × 26 mm, with a total weight of 3.37 kg. The interior panel features a dedicated manual lock button and a protective divider to minimize the risk of finger pinching.

Xiaomi engineers have also improved the acoustics of the automated mechanism. Compared to the first generation, the new fully automatic lock operates much quieter, reducing noise by 12 dB during closing and 13 dB during unlocking for a more pleasant user experience.

Unlocking Methods and Smart Features

The lock provides multiple secure access methods. Alongside the high-speed fingerprint reader, users can utilize permanent, virtual, or one-time passwords, NFC cards, Bluetooth connection, and a traditional mechanical key for backup. Temporary guest access can be managed easily via a WeChat mini-program.

With built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3, users can remotely check the door status via the Xiaomi Home app. The system sends instant alerts if the door is left ajar, if a break-in attempt is detected, or if the wrong password is entered multiple times. A duress fingerprint setup is also included to silently trigger an alarm under threat.

Battery Life and Emergency Power

Power is supplied by 8 AA batteries, which Xiaomi estimates will last for approximately 12 months of normal daily use. When battery levels drop low, the lock issues a warning, and if the batteries are completely drained, users can plug an external power source into the USB-C port located at the bottom of the front panel.

Market Context and Significance

The launch highlights Xiaomi's ongoing commitment to expanding smart home ecosystems and enhancing residential security through accessible technology. Such sophisticated smart locks are increasingly relevant globally, offering users remote monitoring, high reliability, and multi-layered protection for modern apartments and houses.
