Tesla’s rocket-shaped Robotaxi map in Houston is partly 'fake'

Tesla's new rocket-shaped Robotaxi service area in Houston has drawn attention, but not entirely for the right reasons. According to Ethan McKanna, creator of Robotaxi Tracker and a former Tesla employee, the map includes parts of downtown where the service does not actually pick up passengers.

McKanna rode the service following Monday's expansion and labeled Houston as 'by far the most egregious fake AV service area' he has ever encountered. During one trip, he reported spending about 40 minutes in a Robotaxi just to travel two blocks.

This situation highlights discrepancies between marketing presentations and the practical realities of autonomous vehicle deployments. As companies race to expand their robotaxi footprints, mapping boundaries and real-world utility often face scrutiny from industry observers and early testers.

For technology enthusiasts globally, such reports provide a realistic look at the current state of autonomous driving commercialization, demonstrating the hurdles and growing pains still present in the industry today.
