Amazon to deploy over 3,000 TATA electric delivery trucks in India
Amazon and TATA Motors partner to deploy 3,000 electric trucks in India, marking the country's largest commercial EV fleet rollout.

Amazon is continuing to push the boundaries of fleet electrification far beyond its American delivery operations. The global e-commerce giant has announced a major agreement to scale up sustainable transportation in international markets, focusing heavily on India.
- Amazon has struck a deal with Indian automaker TATA Motors to deploy over 3,000 electric trucks across its network.
- This initiative represents the largest electric truck deployment in India to date, moving beyond last-mile logistics.
- The deployment supports Amazon’s overarching goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by global operations by 2040.
- The vehicles chosen are variants of the Tata Ultra E.7, a 7.5-tonne straight truck equipped with a 96 kWh LFP battery.
Vehicle Specifications and Performance The backbone of Amazon’s new heavy electric fleet in India will be the Tata Ultra E.7 platform. These 7.5-tonne straight trucks feature a 240 kW electric motor, producing roughly 320 horsepower, powered by a 96 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. According to the manufacturer, a fully loaded truck can achieve a range of up to 130 kilometers on a single charge. The inclusion of DC fast-charging capabilities ensures that the vehicles can quickly top up their batteries between delivery runs, maintaining operational efficiency along busy freight corridors.
Strategic Expansion of India's EV Infrastructure The new TATA electric trucks will be utilized for hauling goods between warehouse facilities, transitioning from localized last-mile delivery to servicing major intracity and national freight corridors. Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations for Amazon APAC, Middle East, Africa, and Turkey, noted that the company already operates over 15,000 EVs across more than 500 Indian cities. Indian government officials have praised the partnership, emphasizing alignment with national frameworks like Viksit Bharat 2047 and the PM E-DRIVE initiative, which support the transition to green logistics and domestically manufactured commercial vehicles.
Significance for Decarbonizing Freight Transportation Addressing the decarbonization of heavy freight transportation remains one of the toughest challenges in global logistics. The collaboration between Amazon and TATA Motors demonstrates how nationwide logistics networks can partner with local manufacturers to drive sustainable transformation at scale. For the broader transport sector, this deployment serves as a strong signal for scaling EV infrastructure and carrier solutions. By expanding clean energy logistics, Amazon continues to tackle high-emission segments of its supply chain while paving the way for wider commercial EV adoption across developing markets.
