Apple to require 18+ age ratings for dating apps and AI romantic companions
Apple updates App Store guidelines, requiring an 18+ age rating for dating apps and virtual romantic AI companions starting November 16.

Apple has announced new age rating requirements coming to the App Store, specifically covering applications with location-sharing features, as well as dating and relationship functionalities. These updates aim to provide greater transparency and stricter safety controls.
- Developers must declare location and dating features starting November 16
- Dating apps and AI romantic companions will receive a minimum 18+ rating
- All apps must complete the new questionnaire by January 12, 2027
New App Store Connect Requirements
In an update to its Developer News blog, Apple stated that starting November 16, developers must declare whether their applications include location-sharing or dating features when completing the age rating questionnaire in App Store Connect.
This includes sharing real-world locations with individuals or groups, as well as features enabling dating connections between real people or virtual companions engaging users in sexual or romantic content. Apps featuring dating and relationships will automatically receive a minimum age rating of 18+.

Apple noted that apps including shared location features might not see an impact on their minimum age rating in some regions. However, local regulations can impose specific ratings, such as those enforced in Brazil.
In Brazil, local laws require an A16 rating for apps with location-sharing and an A18 rating for dating services. Developers can request a lower official rating from Brazil's Ministry of Justice if their apps qualify, such as family tracking tools designed for parents and children.
Implementation Timeline and Developer Impact
Developers must provide these declarations when submitting app updates or modifying their age rating questionnaires, with a final deadline requiring all existing apps to complete the process by January 12, 2027.
For developers and businesses, this means reviewing app features carefully to ensure compliance with Apple's updated guidelines. Failing to update questionnaire details accurately could result in delayed app reviews or removal from the App Store marketplace.
