Company spending on artificial intelligence surges 5.4x to $177B
According to Menlo Ventures, enterprise spending on artificial intelligence implementation reached $176.8 billion by September 2026.

The global corporate artificial intelligence market is demonstrating unprecedented growth, expanding more than fivefold over the past year. According to a new study by Menlo Ventures, enterprise spending on AI implementation reached $176.8 billion by September 2026, compared to just $33 billion a year earlier. This massive leap highlights the global transformation of business strategies and substantial investments in modern digital tools.
- Annual corporate spending on AI surged to $176.8 billion from $33 billion the previous year.
- 55% of new expenditures were funded through additional budgets rather than staff or legacy software cuts.
- Autonomous AI agents have become the primary growth driver, accounting for roughly 80% of tokens on OpenRouter.
- Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google control 69% of enterprise model deployment expenditures.
Where the Funding for Artificial Intelligence Comes From
Interestingly, the financing of new technologies is primarily driven by the expansion of financial frameworks rather than internal cost-cutting. According to Menlo Ventures, 55% of the spending increase came from entirely new budgets allocated specifically for machine learning initiatives. Another 22% of funds were redirected from traditional software budgets. Notably, only a small fraction of funds shifted to new startups, with just 9% of additional costs going to new AI product vendors.
At the same time, 13% of the funds remained with established software developers who are actively integrating intelligent features into their existing product lines. This indicates that corporate clients prefer working with familiar vendors and gradually upgrading their software ecosystems rather than undertaking radical restructuring of their IT infrastructure from scratch.

Experts attribute this rapid market acceleration primarily to the proliferation of autonomous AI agents. These systems perform tasks independently, operate in parallel, and continue consuming computing resources without constant human supervision. A clear confirmation of this trend is seen on the OpenRouter platform, where traffic from autonomous agents has grown 37-fold since February, reaching approximately 80% of all processed tokens.
Because of the high autonomy of these systems, enterprise expenses are growing much faster than the number of companies adopting the technology. The share of organizations using AI increased from 55% to 65%, while average spending per company nearly quintupled compared to the previous year. The largest share of funds is directed toward automated programming ($34 billion) and corporate chatbots ($25 billion), which together form 76% of the $77.3 billion AI application market.
Market Share Distribution Among Industry Leaders
An analysis of corporate API spending reveals intense competition among key industry players. The implementation of base models is heavily concentrated, with Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google accounting for 69% of all corporate expenditures. Meanwhile, the internal balance of power has shifted: Anthropic's share of corporate API spending jumped from 40% to 55%, OpenAI strengthened its position from 27% to 31%, while Google's metric declined from 21% to 9%.
The research is based on a survey of nearly 400 American executives responsible for AI deployment and managing a cumulative budget of over $4 billion. The authors emphasize that the current AI boom does not signify the mass displacement of traditional enterprise software. Companies still rarely replace established systems such as Salesforce, Workday, and Oracle NetSuite with standalone AI solutions, preferring hybrid approaches.
