Google is sunsetting Gemini Gems; how to migrate to skills

Google has announced that it is reinventing its Gemini Gems feature by replacing them with a more flexible system called skills. Users are encouraged to prepare for the migration before the initial phase kicks off on November 17, 2026, to avoid losing customized workflows.

  • Gemini Gems will become read-only on November 17, 2026, and will be completely removed from accounts on December 17, 2026.
  • The new skills system is built on the open SKILL.md standard, allowing usage across chats and even cross-platform compatibility.
  • Certain unsupported files, legacy formats, and Google Drive contents will not migrate automatically and must be backed up manually.
  • Personal accounts transition first, while Google Workspace and education users have extended deadlines stretching into 2027.

Key dates and timeline for the Gemini Gems shutdown

Google is rolling out the transition in stages to give users time to adapt. For personal account holders aged 18 and older, the first milestone is November 17, 2026, when Gems transition to a read-only state. Users will no longer be able to use, edit, or create new Gems. Exactly one month later, on December 17, 2026, the original Gems will vanish entirely.

Workspace and educational accounts have a more relaxed timeline. Gems will move to settings on November 17 but remain functional until at least March 1, 2027, for Workspace users and June 1, 2027, for educational accounts. Furthermore, the rollout of skills into core Workspace apps like Docs and Sheets has been temporarily delayed by Google.

Why Google is moving from Gems to skills and their benefits

The main drawback of Gems was the requirement to visit them through a dedicated tab, interrupting standard chat workflows. Skills solve this by allowing invocation anywhere in an ongoing chat simply by typing a slash or an at sign. They can also trigger automatically based on custom instructions defined within the skill setup.

Another major advantage is that skills rely on the open SKILL.md standard, making them transferable to rival AI platforms like Claude and ChatGPT. Users can even stack multiple skills within the same chat to combine different writing or research assistance styles seamlessly.

Limitations of the new skills system and migration caveats

Despite the upgrades, the transition introduces certain limitations. Many advanced Gemini features such as Canvas, Deep Research, Guided Learning, and media generation tools are currently incompatible with skills. Additionally, you cannot pull content directly from Google Drive or Notebook, and the active skill limit is capped at 100.

File management requires close attention during the move. Google enforces a 100MB size limit and will purge oversized or unsupported files—including legacy Microsoft Office formats, archives, and media files—on December 17. Users must download these files beforehand to prevent permanent loss.

How to manually recreate your Gems as skills ahead of time

To avoid relying entirely on Google's automated migration, users can proactively recreate their custom Gems. Simple text-based Gems can be transitioned by typing 'create a skill' in a prompt window or copying the instructions manually via the customize settings menu.

If your Gem includes supporting knowledge files, the process requires creating a properly formatted lowercase folder with hyphens, adding your files alongside a SKILL.md configuration file, and uploading the zip archive back into the platform. This ensures your workflow remains uninterrupted.
