Google Photos may soon add event posters directly to your calendar

Google is reportedly working on a major upgrade for Google Photos that will let users turn photos of event posters, flyers, and announcements straight into calendar entries. Found within the code of Google Photos v8.0, the upcoming feature leverages Ask Photos to handle the heavy lifting.

  • Ask Photos in Google Photos v8.0 can pull event titles, dates, times, and descriptions directly from poster photos.
  • The extracted event is handed over via an Android system prompt to work with your default calendar app.
  • Early testing reveals minor AI hiccups, such as incorrect time zone assumptions for ambiguous posters.

How the Calendar Integration Works

During testing with a fashion show poster, Ask Photos successfully identified the invitation details for November 19, 2026, broke down the precise schedule including cocktail hours, and asked if the user wanted to save it. Upon confirmation, Android's system prompt populated the title, date, time, and description automatically.

Interestingly, the feature interacts with whatever default calendar app you use on your Android device, rather than forcing you to use Google Calendar exclusively. Furthermore, the created calendar entry includes a convenient direct link back to the original photo in your gallery for easy reference.

Current Limitations and AI Mistakes

Because the feature is still a work in progress, it is not flawless. When testing a poster that lacked explicit location or time zone details, Ask Photos erroneously assumed a US Pacific time zone and converted it to local testing time, shifting the event slots incorrectly.

Because the confirmation prompt does not explicitly display the time zone, catching such errors beforehand requires extra vigilance. Ask Photos itself includes reminders that AI can make mistakes, urging users to double-check automated entries.

Other Upcoming Features in Google Photos v8.0

This calendar integration is part of a broader Ask Photos overhaul designed to streamline photo library management. Additionally, version 8.0 hints at a dedicated section for RAW photos and new editing tools for vintage film aesthetics. Google has not yet officially announced these upcoming changes.
