Pangram expands its AI detection tools to video and images

Pangram, the company behind a widely used tool for detecting AI text, has released new tools designed to flag AI-generated images and videos. The move marks an expansion into detecting a broader range of synthetic media as digital slop increases online.

  • Launch of new AI video and image detection capabilities
  • Video model achieves over 98 percent accuracy in internal tests
  • Updated image model now available via a Chrome browser extension
  • Tools accessible through subscription with limited free checks

New Capabilities for AI Video Detection

The company states that the underlying model powering its video detection capabilities particularly excels at frontier AI video detection. During testing, it proved to be significantly better at identifying AI videos compared to other detection tools currently available.

According to an internal test detailed by the company, the video model was capable of flagging AI content with an accuracy rate exceeding 98 percent. This advancement addresses the growing challenge of identifying sophisticated synthetic video content across digital platforms.

Upgraded Image Detection and Chrome Extension

Alongside video tools, Pangram has upgraded its AI image detection system. The company's previously released research preview, Pangram Image 1.0, is now available through its official Chrome extension, which automatically scans images while browsing.

The company reported that its image model flagged more than 99 percent of AI images with a false positive rate of 0.27 percent during testing. However, the company notes caveats for resolutions below 512 by 512 pixels, where results are accompanied by a reduced confidence disclaimer.

Technical Challenges and Development Details

Pangram CEO Max Spero noted that developing the image detection model presented unique technical hurdles. Most modern phone cameras utilize AI postprocessing to enhance details in real photos, requiring developers to build a robust model capable of distinguishing between AI edits and fully synthetic visuals.

Spero also mentioned that the release of the image model was delayed to allow testing on multiple iPhone 18 Pro devices because early versions mistakenly flagged standard phone camera outputs as AI. These new detection features are currently available to users with a Pangram subscription.

What This Means for Users and the Industry

The introduction of comprehensive multi-format AI detection tools highlights the ongoing struggle to verify media authenticity in an era of advanced generative models. For businesses, developers, and everyday users, such solutions provide critical safeguards against digital misinformation.
