Volkswagen ID. Polo wins German Car of the Year 2027
Volkswagen's affordable ID. Polo electric vehicle has won the German Car of the Year 2027 title, starting at a price of 24,995 euros.

Volkswagen’s new ID. Polo electric hatchback has officially captured the overall title of “German Car of the Year 2027,” outperforming strong international competition across all vehicle classes. After winning its specific entry-level segment for models priced up to 25,000 euros, the vehicle secured the top spot overall. Notably, the Volkswagen Group has secured this prestigious award for the second consecutive year, following the Skoda Elroq's victory last year.
- Volkswagen ID. Polo won the overall German Car of the Year 2027 title.
- The entry-level model equipped with a 37 kWh battery starts at €24,995 ($28,000).
- It offers a WLTP driving range of up to 207 miles (334 km) and supports DC fast charging up to 90 kW.
- Over 50,000 customers have ordered the EV since order books opened in late April.
Specifications, Battery Options, and Charging
Volkswagen initially opened order books for the ID. Polo in late April featuring a 52 kWh battery pack. In July, the automaker added the entry-level variant featuring a 37 kWh battery, bringing the starting price down to €24,995 ($28,000) and delivering a WLTP range of up to 334 km. Furthermore, Life and Style trim levels are also available with the 37 kWh battery option, starting from €29,195 ($32,500).
The ID. Polo supports DC fast charging speeds of up to 90 kW, allowing the 37 kWh battery configuration to replenish from 10% to 80% in approximately 23 minutes. Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer stated that the prestigious award confirms what the vehicle stands for, noting that the affordable EV brings electric mobility directly into people’s everyday lives where it can make the greatest impact.

Evaluated by a jury of nearly 50 German and international automotive journalists, the award is widely considered one of the most distinguished accolades in the industry. The 2027 awards saw electric vehicles completely dominate across multiple categories. The Kia PV5 van won the compact class for vehicles between €25,000 and €40,000, while the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric took top honors in the premium segment. Additionally, Hyundai’s IONIQ 6 N electric sports car was crowned German Performance Car 2027.
Martin Sander, the VW Group’s sales chief, pointed out that the company is experiencing a significantly accelerated shift toward all-electric vehicles in its domestic market. The automaker's Electric Urban Car Family, built on the MEB+ platform and comprising the ID. Polo, ID. Cross, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq, has accumulated nearly 150,000 orders since series production kicked off in June. While North American buyers will not see the entry-level ID. Polo, Volkswagen is preparing to launch the ID. Tiguan in early 2027 as a successor to the ID.4.
Market Significance and Broader Context
The massive commercial interest reflected in over 50,000 orders demonstrates that European consumers are eager for well-engineered, affordable electric vehicles. By blending Volkswagen's traditional namesake heritage with the brand's new Pure Positive design language, the ID. Polo marks a turning point for the manufacturer's volume strategy.
While markets in Eastern Europe and Central Asia may take time to adopt such compact European EVs due to infrastructure constraints and import specifics, the widespread availability of sub-€25,000 electric cars in Europe signals a mature shift in the global automotive landscape that will eventually influence secondary vehicle markets worldwide.
