Apple Rumored to Drop the iPhone Action Button Next Year
Apple reportedly plans to merge the iPhone's Action button with Camera Control starting in 2027, removing a separate physical key.

Apple is planning to merge the iPhone's Action button with the Camera Control starting next year, according to leak source Instant Digital. Writing on Weibo, the insider claimed that the dedicated Action button will disappear entirely, with its functionality moving over to the Camera Control button.
- Leaker Instant Digital claims the dedicated Action button will be removed, merging with Camera Control.
- A single press will open the camera, while a long press will trigger the Action button function.
- The change is slated to take place starting with new iPhone models released in the second half of 2027.
Functionality and Design Rationale
The proposed layout seems natural given how both features currently operate. The Action button, introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro in 2023, requires a long press to activate its assigned function, whereas a single press of Camera Control opens the camera. Combining them preserves familiar interactions while relocating the customizable action to a different spot on the chassis.
While a long press of Camera Control previously opened Visual Intelligence, that feature has since been integrated directly into the Camera app as Siri mode in iOS 27. This software integration frees up the gesture for other hardware assignments while keeping Visual Intelligence easily accessible.

The Camera Control button received a mixed reception when it debuted on the iPhone 16 due to ergonomics and complexity, making refinement logical. Merging it with the Action button could give the control a clearer purpose, simplify manufacturing, and prevent users from accidentally confusing the Action button with nearby volume controls.
Although earlier rumors suggested Apple might simplify the Camera Control design for the iPhone 18 lineup by removing the capacitive sensing layer in favor of pressure sensing, those plans did not materialize immediately. The latest report indicates a broader hardware redesign is still under consideration.
What This Means for Users
For mobile consumers and tech observers, reducing physical buttons points toward a cleaner, more minimalist smartphone design. The timing aligns with Apple's anticipated 20th-anniversary iPhone lineup arriving in the fall of 2027, though official naming conventions for these upcoming Pro models remain unconfirmed.
