Blue Origin unveils Northstar rocket engine with higher thrust
Blue Origin introduced the Northstar oxygen-methane rocket engine. It is 30% lighter than the BE-4, features 715k pounds of thrust, and uses 3D printing.

Blue Origin has officially introduced Northstar, a brand-new oxygen-methane rocket engine designed for the first stages of heavy-lift launch vehicles. This power unit aims to complement the existing engine family and boost the company's space capabilities.
- The new engine delivers 715,000 pounds of thrust (approx. 318 metric tons-force), outperforming the BE-4's 640,000 pounds.
- Northstar is 30% lighter than its predecessor and contains 50% fewer parts overall.
- Over 65% of the structure is built using additive manufacturing, with assembly taking less than a day.
- The entire timeline from program approval to initial testing spanned just 11 months.
Architecture and Core Technologies
Northstar builds upon the proven architecture of the BE-4 engine. It utilizes liquefied natural gas as fuel and liquid oxygen as an oxidizer, operating on an oxygen-rich staged combustion cycle for maximum efficiency.
The single-shaft turbopump design has been retained to ensure high reliability. By heavily relying on additive manufacturing or 3D printing, engineers managed to drastically simplify the production cycle and eliminate numerous traditional fabrication hurdles.

The extensive use of 3D printing has streamlined production to the point where assembling a single engine takes less than 24 hours. This leap in efficiency significantly enhances Blue Origin's capacity to scale its rocket programs.
Northstar serves as the company's second first-stage booster engine, expanding its versatile lineup. Alongside the engine unveiling, Blue Origin also showcased a 122-meter super-heavy version of the New Glenn rocket and a brand-new third stage.
Significance for the Aerospace Industry
Developing a brand-new orbital-class engine in just 11 months highlights Blue Origin's rapid innovation capabilities. As methane-powered engines become the industry standard for reusable rockets, Northstar positions the company competitively for upcoming deep-space and orbital missions.
