BYD sells over 300,000 EVs in October, beating US quarterly total

The world's leading electric vehicle maker BYD has set a monumental new record by selling over 300,000 pure electric vehicles in a single month. This achievement allowed the Chinese manufacturer to surpass the entire United States EV market sales for the whole third quarter.

  • BYD sold 490,168 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in October, up 11% year over year.
  • Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales reached a record 305,743 units, crossing the 300,000 threshold for the first time.
  • By comparison, the US market sold just over 262,500 EVs in the entire third quarter, per Kelley Blue Book estimates.
  • Overseas shipments reached 170,194 vehicles in October as international expansion accelerates.

Record-breaking sales momentum

October marked BYD's sixth consecutive month of overall sales growth and its third straight month of higher EV sales. Through the first ten months of the year, the company delivered nearly two million electric vehicles. All-electric models accounted for roughly 63 percent of total sales last month.

While plug-in hybrid sales experienced a slight decline, pure EV sales surged by 37 percent compared to the previous year. This growth is driven by continuous technological upgrades and strong domestic demand within China.

Global expansion and future targets

BYD is rapidly expanding its footprint across Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Americas. The company exported over 170,000 vehicles in October alone, with total overseas shipments nearly doubling compared to the previous year.

By the end of 2026, BYD expects international shipments to hit approximately 2 million vehicles, scaling up to over 2.5 million in 2027. Upcoming launches featuring Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging technology are expected to further boost global demand.

What this means for the global EV market

BYD's exceptional performance highlights the significant lead China holds in the global transition to electric mobility. While the US market is currently experiencing its strongest quarters, Chinese automakers are scaling at an unprecedented global pace.

As low-cost domestic brands flood emerging markets and Europe, legacy automakers are struggling to keep up with the rapid pace of innovation and aggressive pricing set by companies like BYD.
