BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme hits record 503 km/h in Abu Dhabi

The modified Yangwang U9 Xtreme electric vehicle from China's BYD has set a new world speed record for production cars. During high-speed testing on public roads in Abu Dhabi, it managed to reach a top speed of 503,17 km/h.

  • Yangwang U9 Xtreme became the first production car in history to officially cross the 500 km/h threshold.
  • The vehicle is powered by four electric motors delivering a combined output of 2,977 horsepower.
  • Production of the ultra-high-performance supercar will be strictly limited to a maximum of 30 units.

Powertrain and extreme engineering

Built on an advanced 1200V high-voltage platform, the U9 Xtreme utilizes BYD's e4 architecture with four independent electric motors capable of revving up to 30,000 rpm. This setup produces a staggering 2,220 kW (2,977 hp). At 503,17 km/h, the vehicle covers nearly 140 meters every single second.

To ensure safety and stability at such velocities, engineers specially optimized the tires, braking system, cooling system, and vehicle dynamics control systems. The new record eclipses the model's previous benchmark of 496.22 km/h by an impressive 6.95 km/h margin.

Aerodynamics and real-world testing conditions

Unlike previous speed tests conducted on closed professional proving grounds, this record-breaking run took place in real-world road conditions. The car had to contend with high ambient temperatures, crosswinds, and desert dust.

To achieve these extreme metrics, the U9 Xtreme received extensive aerodynamic upgrades. These include a large carbon fiber front splitter, a rear diffuser, a hood with dual air ducts, and a tall rear wing featuring swan-neck mounts.

Limited production and ecosystem context

BYD has confirmed that the production of the Yangwang U9 Xtreme will be extremely exclusive, with no more than 30 total units scheduled to be manufactured for global customers.

On the broader technology front, BYD continues to scale its innovations. In March, the company unveiled its Flash Charging 2.0 technology and Blade Battery 2.0, capable of charging from 10% to 97% in just 9 minutes, with plans to deploy 20,000 such charging stations by the end of 2026.
