The gaming world has seen a rapid acceleration in emulation technology following a recent hardware jailbreak. Modder Takoroka released an experimental Switch 2 integration for the Eden emulator called NX2, which laid the groundwork for Eglantine, an emulator that currently runs Mario Kart World best.

  • Eglantine is a free and open-source (FOSS) Switch 2 emulator derived from Eden, Yuzu, and Sudachi, started by developer Camille LaVey.
  • Written in C++ with portability in mind, it includes builds for Windows, Linux, and macOS.
  • The emulator is capable of running Mario Kart World at decent or full speed depending on user specifications and configuration.

Performance and Compatibility of Eglantine

Described as a very experimental project, Eglantine requires a powerful gaming PC to achieve smooth performance. In video demonstrations shared online, Mario Kart World runs surprisingly well with minimal stutters and no major graphical glitches, representing a massive leap forward for the platform's emulation scene.

Other titles, such as Splatoon Raiders, are also being tested, though they currently suffer from low frame rates and occasional crashes. Like many recent emulation and porting projects, the development of Eglantine heavily leverages AI-assisted tools to speed up the process.

Industry Impact and Developer Challenges

Nintendo is unlikely to be pleased with the rapid emergence of Switch 2 emulators so soon after the console's jailbreak. Meanwhile, the broader retro and modern port ecosystem is facing new hurdles, such as Anthropic introducing instructions telling Claude not to recreate specific existing games.

Despite potential limitations from AI model updates, the release of Eglantine's source code on GitHub ensures that independent developers will continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible with modern hardware emulation.
