Tesla Model 3 and Model Y can now act as a backup battery for your home

Tesla is broadening the reach of its Powershare Home Backup feature, allowing certain owners of Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles to use their car batteries to keep the lights on during power outages. Previously, this capability was exclusive to the Cybertruck.

To utilize this home backup feature, owners are required to have Tesla's Powerwall 3 installed. However, the company is also working on extending support to Powerwall 2 and other versions, broadening accessibility for existing energy system owners.

During a grid failure, the EV battery steps in to power essential household appliances and maintain lighting for extended periods, effectively transforming the vehicle into a large backup power source for the home.

As energy independence and smart home integration become increasingly important worldwide, technologies that bridge electric vehicles and domestic power grids represent a significant shift in how consumers manage electricity.

This expansion marks another step in Tesla's ongoing effort to build a seamless ecosystem where vehicles and home energy storage work hand in hand to provide reliability and peace of mind during emergencies.
