NVIDIA brings controversial DLSS 5 to RTX Remix for older games

NVIDIA is continuing to push its neural rendering technology despite mixed reactions from the online community. The company has announced that DLSS 5 is being added to its free RTX Remix modding platform, allowing creators to inject the tech into classic titles.

  • DLSS 5 is officially coming to RTX Remix and the RTX Spark SoC.
  • Community apps allow users to inject neural rendering into almost any PC game.
  • The technology negatively impacts frame rates and requires high-end hardware.

DLSS Remix Integration and Release Schedule

NVIDIA's RTX Remix modding tool has been available for free since early 2024, enabling users to add ray tracing and AI-upscaled textures to older titles. DLSS 5 is officially being added to this software on October 23. Prior to that, on October 16, the technology is coming to RTX Spark, NVIDIA's new system-on-a-chip.

Furthermore, DLSS 5 will be officially added to Hogwarts Legacy on November 5. While NVIDIA has toned down some of the initial over-processed character looks, the technology remains divisive. Critics and gamers continue to debate whether altering in-game lighting and character models fundamentally betrays the original artistic integrity of titles.

Third-Party Apps and Performance Impact

Thanks to an early leaked build of NBA 2K27, modders quickly gained access to DLSS 5's Neural Rendering. Community-built software like DLSS 5 Manager and DLSS 5 Swapper now let users inject the tech into almost any Vulkan or DirectX PC game. Installation is straightforward, automatically scanning drives and installing necessary DLL files within seconds.

However, the biggest caveat of DLSS 5 is its massive performance cost. Unlike previous generations of DLSS that boosted frame rates, DLSS 5 significantly drops FPS. While recent updates have slightly improved performance, enabling neural rendering still results in a heavy GPU load. Unless you own at least an RTX 5070 or equivalent, running the tech remains extremely demanding.

What This Means for PC Gamers

For hardcore enthusiasts with cutting-edge rigs, DLSS 5 offers a fascinating way to overhaul the visuals in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Control. The technology provides noticeable improvements to character rendering, though environment lighting changes are more subtle. Given the steep hardware requirements and divisive visual changes, neural rendering is likely to remain a niche feature for high-end PC gamers only.
