Stronghold 4: early access release date delayed to April 2027

British developer Firefly Studios, owned by Devolver Digital, has announced a schedule change for its ambitious medieval strategy game Stronghold 4. Initially planned for early access in December 2026, the project has been postponed by four months.

  • The early access launch of Stronghold 4 has moved from December 7, 2026, to April 20, 2027.
  • The delay is designed to avoid direct competition with major fall blockbusters like GTA VI and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4.
  • Additional time will allow the team to further polish the game and include an economic campaign at launch.

Reasons behind the Stronghold 4 delay

Studio head Nick Tannahill released a video message explaining that the decision was difficult but ultimately correct. The team is fully committed to delivering a thoroughly polished experience, and the extra months will be crucial for achieving that goal.

Tannahill openly noted that launching close to GTA VI (scheduled for November 19) and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 (December 3) would severely overshadow their title. Moving the date gives the strategy game breathing room to attract the audience it deserves.

What to expect in early access

The four-month extension gives Firefly Studios the opportunity to calibrate gameplay mechanics and integrate an economic campaign right into the initial early access build on Steam, offering a richer experience from day one.

Built on the Unreal Engine 5, Stronghold 4 promises a 22-mission campaign, free-form building modes, skirmishes against eight AI opponents, and various combat scenarios. Russian language localization has also been confirmed by the developers.

Context and industry impact

For strategy fans, the delay guarantees a more refined product rather than a rushed launch. Competing against industry giants during the holiday season carries significant risks for mid-tier developers, making Firefly's strategic retreat a sensible choice.

The new release date of April 20, 2027, provides the developers with ample runway to finalize their features and present the strategy title in top shape before its Steam debut.
