Amazon Reports $42.4B Outflow and Prepares $220B AI Investment

Amazon has concluded the third quarter with a negative free cash flow of 42.4 billion dollars, marking a significant shift from previous periods. In the preceding quarter, this metric stood at minus 7.5 billion dollars, while a year earlier the company enjoyed a positive free cash flow of 14.8 billion dollars. Driven by massive capital expenditures in artificial intelligence infrastructure, Amazon anticipates its total annual spending to reach 220 billion dollars.

  • Amazon's negative free cash flow reached $42.4 billion in the third quarter.
  • Total annual spending is projected to hit $220 billion due to AI investments.
  • Quarterly revenue grew 12% year-over-year to $201.9 billion, missing analyst expectations.
  • Company shares dropped by approximately 7% following the earnings release.

Infrastructure Expansion and Falling Cash Flow

According to the company, a major factor behind the cash flow decline was the surge in property and equipment purchases tied to artificial intelligence initiatives. Financial reports indicate that such procurement volumes increased by 94.8 billion dollars. These investments are critical for expanding the data center infrastructure required to run advanced cloud services and artificial intelligence models. Meanwhile, quarterly revenue reached 201.9 billion dollars, representing a 12 percent year-over-year increase, though it still fell short of Wall Street forecasts.

Amazon is the last among the four major tech giants heavily investing in AI infrastructure to report earnings for this cycle. Data shows that only Microsoft managed to maintain a positive free cash flow during this period, whereas Meta posted minus 2.12 billion dollars and Alphabet reported minus 9.07 billion dollars. Following the earnings announcements, Alphabet shares plummeted by 12 percent, while Amazon stock dropped by about 7 percent in after-hours trading.

Trainium Chips and Bedrock Platform

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy defended the company's aggressive strategy, highlighting proprietary AI developments such as Trainium, custom computing accelerators designed to compete directly with Nvidia hardware. Another key pillar is Bedrock, a comprehensive platform enabling developers to build and scale applications using foundational AI models. Jassy expressed confidence that these proprietary technologies will allow Amazon to capture substantial value from the booming artificial intelligence market.

The CEO also provided updates on AI-powered shopping assistants, noting that customer interactions with Alexa for Shopping surged by 570 percent over the past year. US users engaging with this tool spend an average of 50 percent more per order compared to shoppers who do not use it. However, Jassy acknowledged that shopping through universal AI agents has not yet become widespread consumer behavior, suggesting that the current experience is not yet superior to direct retail browsing.

What This Means for Business and Tech Markets

Amazon's latest financial report highlights the staggering costs associated with the global race for artificial intelligence dominance. Heavy spending on data centers, custom silicon, and cloud capacity is currently straining short-term free cash flows across major tech firms. As capital outlays scale up to unprecedented levels, Amazon must ultimately demonstrate that these multi-billion-dollar investments will yield robust long-term returns and secure its competitive edge in the evolving AI landscape.
