Discord is getting a major speed boost on Android with Rust

Discord is preparing a massive performance upgrade for its mobile application on Android. A brand-new client built entirely in Rust is showing remarkable speed and responsiveness, even when running on lower-end smartphones with limited hardware resources.

  • The new Rust-based Discord client launches in under one second.
  • Complete loading time is achieved in less than two seconds.
  • RAM consumption is drastically reduced compared to older versions.
  • The mobile app shares a unified Rust codebase strategy with the updated desktop client.

What is new in the upcoming Android Discord client Discord CTO and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy recently shared a preview of the upcoming mobile updates on X. In a video demonstration using older, low-end Samsung Galaxy A-series phones, the performance difference was stark. While the legacy client takes roughly three seconds to launch and another two seconds to fully load the interface, the new Rust client boots in less than a second and finishes loading everything before the two-second mark. This dramatic speed improvement stems from a redesigned view layer powered by the same Rust codebase used for the new desktop application. The engineering team has prioritized mobile responsiveness to ensure that users on budget hardware enjoy a smooth, lag-free experience.

Reduced RAM usage and performance optimizations One of the most persistent criticisms of Discord across both desktop and mobile platforms has been its heavy resource footprint. For instance, the new desktop client drops RAM consumption down to around 300MB, whereas legacy desktop versions often consume up to 1,200MB. A comparable efficiency leap is expected on mobile devices, preventing the app from draining battery or slowing down background processes. Additionally, mobile users are hoping that this architectural cleanup will fix lingering UI bugs on foldable phones. Ever since the Android and iOS app codebases were merged a few years ago, foldable device compatibility has occasionally been finicky.

Release timeline and what it means for users An official release date for the new Android client has not yet been announced by Discord, though it is expected to roll out to the public soon. The transition to Rust highlights a major shift toward lightweight, highly optimized client architecture. For everyday users and mobile gamers, this means a faster, more reliable chat experience that doesn't bog down phone performance. Whether chatting while gaming or managing large servers on the go, the upcoming update promises to eliminate the sluggishness that previously plagued lower-end hardware.
