After a long journey spanning nearly a decade and three major design overhauls, Samsung is officially shutting down its proprietary news aggregator application. The service has long provided Galaxy smartphone and tablet users with quick access to curated news directly from their home screens.

  • Samsung News is shutting down after a nearly ten-year run of operation.
  • Galaxy device users can easily transition to Google Discover on their phones and tablets.
  • Multiple simple methods are available to activate Google Discover through the home screen settings.

Why Samsung is retiring the app

Throughout its lifecycle, the application underwent three significant design overhauls in an effort to engage mobile users. However, given the prevalence of alternative platforms and built-in options, the company ultimately decided to discontinue the dedicated news service.

Users accustomed to accessing aggregated news directly from their home screens will still have a seamless alternative. The Android ecosystem provides Google Discover as a robust replacement deeply integrated into the One UI experience.

How to switch to Google Discover

For users running newer versions of One UI, the transition process is straightforward. Simply pinch the home screen, swipe right, and tap Google Discover to set up the alternative news feed.

Alternative methods are also available through the main settings menu. Users can open Settings, navigate to the Home screen section, turn on the add media page option, and select Google Discover as their preferred feed.

What this means for users

For Galaxy device owners, the transition will be relatively smooth as Google Discover offers a similarly personalized content experience. By phasing out redundant apps, Samsung continues to streamline its One UI software ecosystem.
