Tesla Megapack powers Australia's largest energy storage system

The largest energy storage system in the history of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has been officially commissioned in Canberra. Located south of Tuggernong in Williamsdale, the facility is designed to strengthen local energy infrastructure and grid stability.

  • The massive project integrates 136 Tesla Megapack 2 battery units.
  • The total capacity of the storage facility reaches 250 MW.
  • During peak demand, it can power roughly a third of Canberra for two hours.

System Design and Operational Details

Connected directly to the general power grid, the system stores excess electricity during periods of low demand and feeds it back during high-load hours. The project was developed, built, and is operated by the private firm Eku Energy.

The launch of the facility faced a delay of roughly a year, having been originally scheduled for completion in 2025 before being pushed back to early 2026. Despite the timeline shift, the complex is now fully operational.

Financial Framework and Regional Benefits

Under the 15-year operating agreement, the ACT government will pay Eku Energy 386 million Australian dollars. In return, the region will secure 50% of the net revenue generated from selling the stored electricity back to the market.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr expects the revenue streams to outweigh the support costs, making the project profitable for the region. The storage facility will also reinforce energy infrastructure for homes, businesses, hospitals, universities, and data centers.

Impact on Modern Energy Infrastructure

The deployment of this industrial-scale battery highlights the growing trend of integrating large storage solutions into regional power grids. It ensures reliable power supply and supports the ongoing transition toward sustainable energy sources.
