Windows 11 on 8GB RAM: What Microsoft Improved
Microsoft details how Windows 11 performance has improved on 8GB RAM PCs with better efficiency, responsive apps, and multitasking upgrades.

Microsoft has shared specific details on how Windows 11 performance has noticeably improved across a wide range of applications on computers with 8GB of RAM.
- 8GB RAM PCs are now up to 20 percent more responsive and 40 percent faster at multitasking.
- Office apps and third-party tools like WhatsApp consume less memory.
- New resource-saving features include sleeping tabs and on-demand widgets.
- Improvements require Windows 11 version 26H2 (build 26300.9818 or later).
Memory Optimization and System Responsiveness
The company claims that 8GB PCs are now up to 20 percent more responsive and 40 percent faster at multitasking. Windows can now retain up to 2GB more active data in memory rather than moving it to slower storage, helping the PC stay responsive as browser tabs accumulate. Interactions such as opening the Start menu, File Explorer, and Settings, along with searching and right-clicking, are up to 20 percent more responsive due to background task re-allocation.
Apps like Microsoft Edge can open up to 33 percent faster, while Efficiency Mode in Teams is turned on by default on 8GB PCs to speed up launches by up to 20 percent. Apps like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook now use up to 360MB less RAM due to enhanced efficiency, and even third-party apps like WhatsApp hog less memory than before.

Additional RAM-saving methods include widgets that only load when opened and inactive tabs going to sleep after 15 minutes by default on 8GB configurations. Multitasking workflows were tested using 20 browser tabs, a 4K video, Outlook, File Explorer, and large Office files. While 16GB or more remains recommended for processor-hungry creative professionals, everyday users can get more done on an 8GB PC.
Newer processors also play a significant role. For instance, a 2026 8GB Dell XPS 13 delivers over 90 percent faster multi-core CPU performance than its 2021 predecessor. The same 8GB model largely matched a 2021 configuration with twice as much memory in general CPU performance, web browsing, 4K video export, and select AI tasks.
What This Means for Users and Productivity
For millions of users relying on standard 8GB laptops and desktops, these updates provide a tangible boost without requiring an immediate hardware upgrade. Although heavy creators and power users will still benefit from 16GB or more, standard productivity tasks are now much smoother. To experience these improvements, users must ensure their Windows 11 PC is running version 26H2 (build 26300.9818 or later) and keep their apps updated.
