Honda RN0: The Japanese giant unveils its first premium e-MTB

Japanese manufacturing giant Honda, known globally for producing everything from generators and lawnmowers to automobiles and airplanes, has expanded its electric vehicle lineup. The company has officially introduced its first premium electric mountain bike at the EICMA 2026 exhibition in Milan.

  • The new model is named Honda RN0 and was jointly developed with German high-end e-MTB manufacturer ROTWILD.
  • It features a proprietary carbon monocoque frame and a motorcycle-inspired gull-arm swingarm design.
  • The e-bike weighs approximately 24 kg and incorporates high-grade Shimano components and electronics.
  • Pricing and exact release dates have not yet been disclosed by the manufacturer.

A Nod to Racing History

Honda's involvement in mountain biking dates back to the early 2000s with its experimental RN01 downhill racing bike, which won the overall series championship in the UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup in 2005. Although that bike was never commercialized for the general public, the new RN0 effectively picks up where Honda's bicycle engineering journey left off more than two decades ago.

Weighing roughly 24 kg, the multi-role RN0 electric mountain bike is equipped with 160 mm FOX 36 FLOAT Factory Kashima front suspension and a FOX FLOAT X Factory Kashima rear shock. It rolls on DT Swiss H1900 SPLINE wheels utilizing a mullet setup with a 29-inch front and 27.5-inch rear wheel, while Shimano DEORE XT four-piston brakes provide reliable stopping power.

Motor Power and Smart Assistance

The e-bike relies on Shimano's lightweight 2.3 kg drive unit capable of delivering up to 100 Nm of torque and 750 watts of peak output, powered by a substantial 720 Wh battery. Intelligent features include AUTO ASSIST, which adjusts motor support based on terrain, and AUTO SHIFT, which automatically manages gear shifting to maintain optimal cadence during rides.

Market Outlook and Expectations

While Honda has not yet announced official pricing details, the inclusion of a carbon chassis, Factory-level suspension, and advanced Shimano electronics suggests it will target enthusiasts rather than casual riders. The RN0 clearly demonstrates Honda's intent to bring its deep motorcycle engineering expertise into the modern high-end electric bicycle segment.
